What is interesting about this article is that it is NOT suggesting a conspiracy of silence between police and Rotherham council, but rather it is saying that the problem was self-imposed confidentiality on the part of the council, perhaps suggested by the police.
This does seem to have a direct parallel with the failure of the EDDC’s mandated “East Devon Business Forum Task and Finish Group” to even start their own investigation into a Daily Telegraph front page, which suggested that an EDDC councillor would procure planning permission for money.
Leaving aside the entirely different subject matter, what they have in common is a perceived cover-up – the difference between Rotherham and East Devon here being that there is no suggestion Rotherham Council were keeping this “confidential” because any of their councillors were implicated. This cannot be said for East Devon District Council.
It really is about time that EDDC stopped being so secretive, and started to demonstrate that they are whiter-than-white by cleaning-house and by being open and transparent.
