It seems that these days we are being pressurised into believing that only supermarkets can fund ” improvements”. How did we do this before supermarkets existed? Surely there must be other ways of raising funds. And does everyone necessarily want “improvements” that they don’t get a say in anyway?
How have Exmouth, Axminster, Ottery and Seaton “improved” thanks to supermarkets?
In the current climate of austerity and cuts, it may indeed be the only way to fund improvements, but if S106 money is paid in, then it should be for residents and not EDDC to decide how it is spent.
To be fair, I believe that the new pedestrian bridge in OSM was paid for out of S106 money, but not I think the Sainsbury S106 money. So OSM has yet to see any S106 benefit from having the huge, disproportionately-sized and frankly hideously out-of-architectural-character Sainsbury’s supermarket built in the town centre.
