Visiting the envisaged Jurassic Coast Visitor Centre in Seaton will not be able to stay in the planned adjacent hotel as Tesco has agreed to sell that part of the site to McCarthy and Stone (who have put in an application for 42 retirement flats), if their planning application is successful.
The site was originally supposed to have a hotel, leisure facilities and 300 plus general and affordable houses. The affordable percentage was originally set at 40% but was later reduced to 25% and then to zero percent.
Along with the Tesco store the site will now have only general and retirement housing, no affordable housing, no leisure facilities and no hotel.
Call me cynical if you will, but I would imagine that c. 65 retired people (assuming occupancy of 1.5 per flat) living right next to Tescos probably represents a better demographic for regular Tesco customers than a hotel full of itinerant visitors who will eat in restaurants which are not supplied by Tesco.

I have not been able to find the planning reference number in order to access it and comment on the East Devon website.

Is this not one of the problems of a shortage of housing for young East Devon residents, because developers are being able to build so many retirement flats which is not helping with a balanced population, because of older retired people selling up properties in other counties and coming down to the west country, this has effects on social services and our NHS.
This is what i myself did some 15 years ago so i do not blame anybody who wishes to do the same, but it should not be detrimental to a young population who find it increasingly hard in acquiring a reasonable priced property in the area they live.
It is more lucrative business to sell to those who have the capital to buy at highly inflated prices to the likes of the better off.
I would hope planning would take account of this, but i am concerned that little will change, unless we have a change of how our MP acts on our behalf, against the Governments present policies, and the administration of County Hall and our EDDC
