Budleigh Salterton: Timeo Danaos et donna ferentes

Timeo Danaos et donna ferentes – “Beware Greeks bearing gifts”

Odysseus had the idea of a Trojan Horse. When the massive wooden statue was left at the gates of Troy, the Trojans thought the Greeks had left it as a parting gift because they had given up and sailed home. The Trojans welcomed the gift, not knowing that the belly of the horse was filled with armed soldiers who would soon destroy their city.

Think of this when reading this article whilst similarly bearing in mind that it is election year:

  1. What an extraordinary state of affairs! Our local Conservative Politicians are so out of touch with the problems small business are facing, especially in the High Street, that the only thing that gives them pause (and it may only be pause until May 2015) from their ill-considered aim of “EDDC taking back control of what it owns, with all that it implies” is an intervention from the Lord of the Manor.

No doubt this intervention reminded EDDC of the original well-intention and generous gift of the land for the free use of the inhabitants and visitors to Budleigh Salterton. Covenants preclude its use for trade or business without the prior written consent from Clinton Devon Estate. CDE did not profit from their endowment of the land and clearly did not wish anyone else to profit from it either. The Cabinet arrogantly chose to ignore this when they decided to annex it for profit in July.

All praise to the local business community for sticking up for themselves, the people and visitors to Budleigh Salterton!
