Is it also true that Hugo moved out of the constituency during this parliament? Less likely to bump into constituents in the supermarket at Copplestone.
Hugo’s predecessor in this once safe seat was the ‘amiable blunderbuss’ Sir Peter Emery, who also lacked local connections. He was most famous for sharp escapades in his business career, such as when in 1980, he was “severely reprimanded by the public accounts committee for “gross profiteering”. This was when a diving school run by one of his companies was creaming 70% in profits despite existing on a generous provision of government and EU funding. Despite this and other interesting activities in Africa he was considered a worthy representative for the cost cutting party with it’s good reputation with finances for a further 21 years.
