Be in no doubt this is down to the Tories, starting with Cameron then quickly moving on to Hugo Swire who, despite a request from Independent Claire Wright who asked Swire to speak up in pariament for Devon and vote against the cuts in county budgets, voted with his party and did not speak against the motion. Then it trickles down from county to the then Tory run EDDC.
According to a FOI that I submitted, this may affect the occupants of up to 1340 properties. (https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/increased_charges_to_sheltered_a#incoming-644262)
What EDDC are admitting to, though they avoid using the words, is that they will evict people in sheltered accomodation who cannot or will not pay these imposed charges. Let me put that another way. EDDC have said that they will evict some of the most needy in our district.
This information has been known about for some while but you may, like me, wonder how Hugo Swire has been so silent on the matter. Yet has the gall to say, on his latest election notice after My priorities for East Devon, ” Stand up for pensioners in East Devon to ensure that they get a fair deal” Really ? – JUST WHAT HAS HE DONE?
Treat this man, and his fellow Tories with the contempt they deserve – get rid of the lot on 7th May.
PS. Now you understand why Claire Wright says she gets angry with some of what goes on. Me too.
Unconfirmed reports have it that both Mid Devon and North Devon have found funding for this for their tenants, probably from central government sources, but that EDDC missed the boat.
I now have further information. In order to minimise costs to tenants, Mid Devon have ceased to offer or provide any warden services but will be asking tenants to pay a fixed sum for a home alarm (not sure of amount). It should be noted that EDDC warden services are very minimal and infrequent and really add nothing to an alarm. Wardens, for example, can’t cook a meal, run an errand, make a bed or even change a light bulb.
EDDC Housing Services minutes of 15 January 2015 seem to indicate that the home alarm element of the proposed £13/week charge is £3.70/week or £14.80/month.
As a staunch upholder of market principles and value for money, I have subjected this to market testing. Cheapest deal I have found to date is £10.67/month from Lifeline24.
