27 Tory MPs voted against allowing shops to open all day on Sundays and the Government was defeated.
Government Minister Brandon Lewis said they had stopped “one billion pounds of growth”.
Does this mean that ar least 27 Tory MPs are not swayed by their party’s mantra of growth, growth and only growth?
Seeds of dissent …
I have no objections to large stores being open for 6 hours only as this still makes Sunday different to the rest of the week. If they’re allowed to open as normal it will just become another week day except of course Banks, offices, dentists , GP surgeries and council offices will probably still be shut. In addition this will squeeze still further local independant shops and the cynic in me thinks that, unlike big business, they might not be donators to the Tory Party. You only have so much disposible income so the amount you spend will only be spread over a longer period so in theory the stores will take the same amount but will have to pay increased costs for the extra time they are open. In order to reduce costs they will only pay flat rate to the staff and it will become part of the employees contract to work weekends which is the SNP’s argument.
