Q: When is an answer not an answer? A: when it is an EDDC senior councillor’s answer!
Transcribed from Exmouth Journal:
Q – We mentioned the visitor’s survey. If the outcome of the survey is that overwhelmingly visitors like the seafront the way it is and don’t want much to change, will that be the way the council then proceeds?
A – “The visitors’ survey doesn’t involve local people, it’s for visitors only. It will give us an indication of what visitors perceive is a visitor wish list when they go on holiday, what they like to see.
The interesting thing is this survey is being conducted by the South West Research Company, and we looked for a company from the South West because, when we talk about benchmarking Exmouth Against other seaside towns, it’s no good trying to compare Exmouth against Blackpool. We wanted to try and compare a South West offer with other South West seaside towns and resorts so we can see where we are.”
Umm…and the answer to the question is…?!
Back in 1919 Lord Clinton allowed the Exmouth District Council to purchase land which included the Maer and surrounding land and property which covered nearly 52 acres of the sea front.
This was intended to be used as amenities for the benefit of the public, and no further area’s building sites other then any premises for upkeep and enjoyment of the pleasure grounds.
It was said that the proposal to buy the land on behalf of the community was of the greatest importance to Exmouth, and was in fact it was doubted if ever there had been a proposal before the Council “of greater importance” .
The Council Chairman said at that time, it was a magnificent thing it would be for the town so to keep it for ever.
The price was fixed at £9000 which required a great deal of negotiation to agree with Lord Clinton for the whole of the foreshore from the pier to Rodney Point, the Cricket Ground, tennis courts, the Plantation, and open space in front of Beacon Then the Chairman was recorded in saying, I know of few finer Marine Drives then what we have, and no other towns have such a glorious stretch of Coastline Scenery. Now we have to see what will happen with such a large development looming.
