Even the reviled Dr Beeching was responsible to the then Transport Minister Ernest Marples.
Marples family were heavily involved in concrete manufacture, a fundamental in the manufacture of early motorways, direct beneficiaries of rail closure. No surprise the there!

Doesn’t mean that he isn’t a vacuous truffler who should be tossed out of East Devon soonest though.
