Let’s be clear – BT is NOT committed to bringing superfast broadband to 95% of homes – they are committed to bringing fibre broadband to 95% of homes which is NOT the same thing at all. BT’s new fibre runs past the front of my house, and when Ottery St. Mary was fibre enabled, I applied to switch from copper to fibre only to find that the fibre broadband speed was going to be similar to copper broadband – just more expensive. The reasons for this were simple … the broadband speed is related to the length of copper cable between your home and the green roadside cabinet, and our green roadside cabinet was several miles away near the telephone exchange – so same distance of copper, same broadband speed. So despite the fibre running past our house, we cannot benefit from it at all. SUMMARY: BT got paid to deliver fibre broadband to our hamlet that is no faster than normal broadband – what a rip off to the taxayer / County Council.
