Can you imagine Hugo admitting it if, perchance, he didn’t get an “excellent response on doorstep”?
And of course, if a number of householders had actually answered “Excellent” to his question about how well he represented them in the last parliament, then he would have said:
“Excellent” response on doorstep.
rather than:
Excellent response on doorstep.
And if Hugo’s definition of Excellence were, say, a measure of how passionate the householder felt about him. then if every householder swore at him with real anger, that would qualify as an “Excellent response” because it was passionate and heart-felt.
Or, if the actual responses had been positive towards him, he might have said “Very supportive response on doorstep”. But he didn’t say that, did he.
Instead, as you might expect from a seasoned politician that he is, we got a vague but positive sounding and ultimately meaningless sound-bite from him.
Oh – there are a lot of farm animal related sayings that come to mind when I look at that photo.
But the most startling thing for me is that Hugo is looking tired, stressed and flustered – though I cannot imagine why.
