Particularly that young people feel less connected to the coast than over 55’s and that, according to the National Trust, coastal tourism is down 20% overall:
I can’t speak for other areas, but I am not surprised if it is happening in East Devon because EDDC do very little if anything to advertise the Jurassic Coast. They have built the new Jurassic tourist attraction but without widespread advertising no one gets to know about it!!
What can you expect when Seaton is having a £4 million Jurassic Interpretation centre which will promote the sea-side town, as the start of the Devon world heritage coast, and hoped that the visitors should reach 40,000 a year.
We in Exmouth wanted to be classed as the Gateway to this Jurassic Coast, with the Elizabeth Hall building refurbished and modernized as a heritage and tourist community centre.
Our Council voted for a Whitbread Premier Inn, The money they take is not spent in Exmouth, it is all banked-rolled back to the city. If our Council had been smart, they could have had both, A tourist centre, on the Elizabeth Hall ground and a extended premier Inn with room for a large restaurant on a much bigger site else-where in Exmouth.

It remains to be seen if Seaton’s Centre will in fact attract visitors in the numbers needed once the novelty has worn off.
