“Unable to buy, people – especially the young – are turning to rent as the only option. Private rents are exploding: the UK average monthly private rent is now £900, up 10% on last year. This is a dog-eat-dog world of large deposits, six weeks’ rent paid in advance and stunning agents’ fees. So for just a moderate flat the renter has to find more than £2,000 even to cross the threshold.
Hence, social housing has never been more important – yet last year only 1,230 new council houses were built to offset an estimated 10,000-15,000 that are sold each year. More than 1.5m council homes have been sold since 1980.”

This is one of the reasons why we should not support this large development of what we believe will be high end prices for all the intended apartments which EDDC had said they would have no residential property within this Queens Drive leisure zone they have planed for our sea front all along Queens Drive in Exmouth.
We had been told that it had been fully funded, but now the word is out that this will not be possible unless the developer can build apartments above the retail outlets. Of course after EDDC had paid £60,000 for buying out the covenants they will comply with Developers wishes.
We do also realize that we have many young families on low wages who do need affordable accommodation, and this will not be helped with building high value sea front flats anywhere in East Devon let alone Exmouth, which EDDC are fully aware of.
I was part of the large group from Exmouth who joined the Sidmouth walk to the Knowle, i do hope we will have some representation from Sidmouths EDA in supporting us at our first public meeting at All Saints Church at 2pm 26th of sept.
We could do with all the help we can get, regarding this matter over the next few months.
