Swire: the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind …

Swire’s Twitter feed today informs us how excited he is that Hinkley C is going ahead.

Does anyone recall him saying anything at all about Hinkley C in the last few months?

Why does he wait until things are decided to tell us he supports them?

Might it be that he watches which way the wind blows and then bends with it?

  1. The answer my friend is … that he is a Conservative MP.

And Conservative MPs would prefer not to be embroiled in a debate where:

    a. they have to listen to the whinging of their constituents; and
    b. they have to come up with convincing arguments to refute those put forward by their whinging constituents (assuming of course that there are potential ways to refute them); and
    c. which is pointless anyway because they have already made up their minds.

By staying silent and staying in the shadows, he stays out of the fray and doesn’t get even more negative press – this time negative press on something really emotive rather than the much less potent negative press that he is a waste of space.

But, let us point out again for the record, that his constituents are largely against Hinkley C and he has yet again failed to represent his constituents in (what – if we are extremely generous with our definitions – be called) the debate.

  2. P.S. But I can easily imagine that if Theresa May had decided against Hinkley C, he would have applauded that decision just as strongly – Hugo is after all a member of the Society of Janus.
