Cause or effect? Sudden interest in EDW nuclear safety post

This week’s most visited page by far is one originally posted on 21 October 2016 about nuclear plants being shut down in France for safety reasons:

5 French nuclear reactors closed and 7 others examined for safety reasons

Coincidentally, one of the films on TV this week was “The China Syndrome” – a fictional story about a radioactive leak in a US nuclear power plant and its subsequent cover-up and unhappy ending.

Coincidence?

  1. It may have been fictional but the parallels with real life are striking. The causes of the nuclear accident were:

    a. Use of poor quality steel in the mountings for a massive pump – Hinkley C is being part built by the Chinese and we have all heard stories about the poor quality of Chinese steel.

    b. The quality assurance tests were falsified – which is exactly what the French nuclear controversy is about.

So perhaps the renewed interest is prompted by people watching the film and then being worried about something similar happening with Hinkley C.

BTW, I watched the China Syndrome and it is a great film – Jack Lemmon and Jane Fonda are brilliant. Though Michael Douglas’ performance is good, his role as Jane Fonda’s cameraman is minor by comparison. I have no doubt that it will be repeated a few times in the next few weeks if anyone wants to watch it.

Should we expect another spike in interest when they show Silkwood again?
