  1. He gets to choose because he is the current Conservative despot controlling both what is put forward as policy and how Conservative MPs vote. He doesn’t have to bother with anything like Democratic legitimacy because democracy is well and truly dead – it was dead when he lied about the benefits of Brexit before the referendum, it was even deader when he was not prosecuted for blatant over spending by his Leave campaign, died further when Theresa May tried to prevent Parliament deciding to trigger A50 and wanted to do it unilaterally, it was even more dead when she refused to take Parliament’s “no” to her deal, and now Johnson will go for a no-deal Brexit that he personally said would never happen and which consequently didn’t get a single vote in the referendum regardless of the economic consequences, and he will shut-down democracy if necessary in order to get his own way (and ironically will claim to do so in the name of democracy).

Britain is a now a shithole of greedy, nasty people with a government that has trashed democracy and allows the PM to act as a dictator!!

  2. Today’s attack on democracy by Boris Johnson is to squash the debate and opposition to his economically suicidal no-deal by appointing as many new Brexit-rabid peers (or Brexit heroes as he terms them – just like his own heroism in defying the law of the UK by overspending in the referendum) as necessary to squash any dissent in the Lords.

From a democratic stand-point, the purpose of a second chamber is to act as a check-and balance against the primary chamber. To appoint a tranche of peers in order to force through his plans by squashing dissent is no different in result to sending the troops into the Lords and forcing them to vote the way he wants at gunpoint.

Can anyone now point to anything in our political system that can still be classed as democracy?
