How fearful
And vile it is to hear that Dover Cliff,
That icon of our green and pleasant land,
Is to be built upon! This dear, dear land,
Outstanding in its nat’ral beauty*, to
Become the victim of devel’pers’ greed
And Tory policy! Methinks the Bard,
Who set his famous scenes on this same spot,
Will turn within his grave to hear such news –
His “other Eden” sold off for a song.
‘Tis almost too much to bear. For, no more
Will any of our lovely scenes be safe.
The planning system does not guard our land.
Who could conceive such ill? I’ll write no more
Lest my poor brain be sickened at the thought –
To see our country ruined.
