  1. I happened to be in a polling station when a near neighbour of mine and her husband turned up to vote only to find they were not on the register. No attempt was made to correct the clerical error.

  2. Just listened to this and was completely astounded by some of Mark Williams’ responses.

In essence, he seems to be saying he took it upon himself to ignore his legal obligations apropos electoral registration but, fear not, he’s happy what he did was in the best interests of East Devon constituents – save, that is, for those who are no longer eligible to vote as a result of his [in]actions! – which rather begs the question what other legislation might he have taken it upon himself to ignore?!

As you might imagine, this leads to some searching questions about who scrutinises his performance and, predictably, the answer is no-one.

  3. I noticed the completely different approach to canvassing in South Somerset District Council from EDDC. Presumably there they often have to approach remote houses by boat along a flooded road. There they have canvassed all properties. It is noticeable that in South Somerset District Council the political make-up is of a different complexion and also that some of the seats are quite close results. Perhaps this makes for a difference in the Electoral Returning Officer’s view of his job and also in how close the political scrutiny is that he is subjected to.
