Our Energy Minister, Amber Rudd, has written a public letter (i.e. press release) that states that one benefit of Hinkley C is that ” … it will power homes for 60 years … and we are only paying for 35″.
Oh, Amber, Amber, your innocence pains Owl!
In year 36 (if we ever get there) EDF and Chinese investors will almost certainly suddenly find massive unanticipated and unplanned-for major difficulties that will, sadly, mean that Hinkley C must close.
That’s politics, Amber.
Or more likely they will compromise on the design so that it will only last 35 years in order to save money on the build.

If this was the case (which I am sure it isn’t) rather than be charged the agreed rate for 35 years and then have 25 free, wouldn’t it be better to be charged 35/60 of this rate for the full 60 years? This would put the risk where it belongs – in te private sector.
