More than 80 MPs (including south-west Tories) back cut in tourism VAT

Which puts them at odds with our (Tory) council which savaged Independent councillor Claire Wright when she suggested they too should support this. Many EU countries have low or no VAT for their tourism industries.

However, our two MPs side with EDDC.

  1. In one way I am rather surprised that Mr Swire isn’t backing this.

I say surprised because, in 2009, when he was in opposition, he was critical of government not doing enough for tourism, and of proposals to change rules that would increase the tourism industry taxation costs.

He said, for example “For too long, there has been a lack of recognition of extra infrastructure burdens faced by seaside resorts. Instead, they are left to the local authorities to fund and, with squeezed budgets, are often forgotten, overlooked or put simply at the bottom of the “to do” list. Yet it is only after the public realm infrastructure receives investment that the private sector will be willing to invest.

Mr Swire, quite properly, pointed out that his wife had at that time, just become the owner of a holiday-let property in Cornwall- it is not know if she still owns the holiday let.
