In a notice at the entrance to the Weggis Farm, in Oak Road, Higher Metcombe, Ottery St. Mary, the East Devon District Council says that a proposal to demolish barns and an existing bungalow, and the construction of six four-bedroom houses is not in accordance with development plans for East Devon.  

Critics of the proposal point out that the site, which  lies outside a defined village Built-Up Area Boundary, is in the countryside which means that developments should be resisted unless, for example, there is a clear local need that could not otherwise be achieved. Building dwellings on agricultural land would mean the loss of land that, according to various regulations,  should be employed for differing agricultural purposes if the original use can no longer be sustained.  

Local residents have expressed concern at the impact on the already stretched local infrastructure, the lack of public local transport and the dangers of walking along busy roads that lack pavements and have a poor safety record. The impact on the rural environment is another important factor.
