When is he going to visit the “real” Devon?

Andy Burnham’s surprise visit to Devon was curtailed as he spent time visiting those affected by wildfires in the West Midlands. The most extensive report of his visit can be found on Exeter Labour’s facebook page:

We were delighted to welcome Prime Minister Andy Burnham to Exeter today, where he visited our world-leading Met Office, accompanied by Leader of Exeter’s Labour Council, Cllr Phil Bialyk. It was a visit that reflects the Prime Minister’s commitment to deliver growth in every postcode, including here in the South West.

Recognising Exeter’s contribution to climate science and innovation comes at a crucial time for the country as we face severe wildfire risks. The Met Office is at the forefront of understanding our changing climate, using world-leading science, data and modelling to help predict extreme weather and understand the risks it poses to communities. That expertise is particularly important as we face the growing risks of extreme heat, drought and wildfires.

Following the awful fires our city has faced in Mincinglake Valley Park and Barley Valley Park, we echo the Government’s advice to stay safe and not use disposable BBQs, fire-pits, incinerators or fireworks. We also extend our thanks to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue for their quick response to both fires.
