Downing Street worried about election expenses scandal

“The police probe centres around allegations that the Conservatives spent more than legally allowed in marginal constitutencies during the 2015 General Election, and did not declare full expenses.

Up to six local constituencies could be forced into hurried by-elections following a police investigation into expenses fraud, senior Tories fear.
It is possible that party officials could face charges.

The police probe centres around allegations that the Conservatives spent more than they were legally allowed campaigning for marginal seats during the 2015 General Election, and did not declare full expenses.

Files are set to be passed to the CPS within the next few weeks, The Times reports, and it is believed half a dozen seats could be affected.”

  1. Not usual for the Daily Mail to understate things – though of course they are fully backing the Tories.

Yes – there may be by-elections. Yes – there may be charges against individuals.

But the real issue here is that (if proven) the Conservative Party (and possibly other parties too) may have DELIBERATELY broken election laws designed to protect democracy and prevent unfair advantage by the well funded major parties over minority candidates.

These sorts of anti-democratic attitudes are scandalous and simply unacceptable.

However, this is of course only one of the many recent examples of anti-democratic behaviour by the Tory Party i.e. promoting opaque and unaccountable quangos like LEPs, dismantling the NHS and privatising health services, privatising education (Academy Schools), none of which was in their election manifesto, and all of which are being introduced without the extensive debate they deserve.

So I certainly hope that something more is said and happens to try to restore a severely damaged democracy – much more than a few by-elections and a few prosecutions of individuals would do.
