Two other independent candidates are registered as well as Claire Wright plus Labour, Liberal Democrats and UKIP to challenge Tory Hugo Swire.

Tiverton and Honiton’s Labour candidate, former Honiton Mayor Caroline Kolek has hit more trouble:

  1. Really hope sense will prevail and other East Devon MP candidates get behind the only candidate that has a very strong chance of toppling Swire and that is Claire Wright. I would hate to see Claire’s votes reduced by those that have no chance of succeeding in becoming our future MP

  2. In 2015, had it been a straight race between Hugo Swine and Claire Wright, with all the votes cast for the other candidates given to Claire, then she would have won with a majority of 3,915.

Of course, not all the votes for other candidates would have gone to Claire, but if most of them did so, she could well have won.

We can only hope that having 6 candidates splitting the non-Tory vote does not result in Hugo Swine being returned for yet another splurge into the pig trough. If only the other non-Tory candidates would recognise that they haven’t a hope and withdraw in favour of Claire, then that would maximise the chances of Hugo Swine being unseated.

Some analysis of the other candidates:

Janet Ross (Lab) – Stood for DCC in Broadclyst Division in May 2017 DCC elections with c. 410 votes cf. c. 1,500 – 1,600 votes for the two Conservatives elected. According to the election notice, she doesn’t live in the constituency, though her Labour Party page says she lives in Exmouth. A Google search (“Janet Ross” Devon) is utterly devoid of any track record of campaigning on issues.

Alison Eden (Lib Dems) – Teignmouth Town Councillor, and TeignBridge District Councillor since a by-election in Sep 2016. Does not live in the constituency. A Google search (“Alison Eden” Devon) is pretty devoid of any track record of campaigning on issues.

Peter Faithful (Ind) – EDDC Councillor since May 2015, Ottery St. Mary Town Councillor. Lives in Ottery. A Google search (“Peter Faithful” Devon) pretty devoid of any track record of campaigning on issues.

Brigitte Graham (UKIP) – Stood for DCC but got c. 800 votes cf. c. 2,700-2,800 for the two Conservatives who won seats and c. 2,200 for the Independent Ben Ingham. Lives in Budleigh Salterton. A Google search (“Brigitte Graham” Devon) is utterly devoid of any track record of campaigning on issues.

Michael Val Davies (IND) – Stood as Independent Candidate for MP for Barnsley Central in a 2011 By Election (despite living in Exmouth) and got 60 votes (0.2%). A Google search (“Michael Val Davies” OR “Michael Davies” Devon) pretty devoid of any track record of campaigning on issues.

Claire Wright (IND) – Was EDDC councillor for many years. DCC Councillor recently re-elected in a landslide victory (c. 75% of the vote for the second consecutive time). Lives in Ottery St.Mary. A Google search (“Claire Wright” Devon) has well over 100 links about her campaigning on issues.
