“Conservatives’ donors give 10 times as much as Labour’s in one week”

Tories: £3.77 million from donors this week
Labour: £331,499 this week
Liberal Democrats: £310,500 this week
Women’s Equality Party: £71,552 this week
UKIP: £16,500 this week

Claire Wright: £12,000 since her campaign started – all from small, local donors as Claire does not accept corporate donations

The Conservatives raised more than 10 times as much as Labour last week, partly thanks to a donation of over £1m from the theatre producer behind The Book of Mormon and The Phantom of the Opera.

John Gore, whose company has produced a string of hit musicals, gave £1.05m as part of the £3.77m received by the Conservatives in the third week of the election campaign.

In the same time, Labour received only £331,499.

The Electoral Commission only publishes details of donations over £7,500, so the smaller donors who make up most of Labour’s fundraising are not identified. Almost all Labour’s larger donations came from unions, including £159,500 from Unite.

The new figures show the Conservatives have received £15.2m since the start of 2017, while Labour has received £8.1m. The large donations came as the poll lead held by the Conservatives and Theresa May appeared to fall following controversies around her social care policy.

In the week starting 17 May, the Liberal Democrats received £310,500, of which £230,000 came from the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust and £25,000 came from the former BBC director general Greg Dyke.

The Women’s Equality party received £71,552, with Edwina Snow, the Duke of Westminster’s sister who is married to the historian Dan Snow, giving £50,000. Ukip’s donations fell dramatically to £16,300 from £35,000 the previous week.

Political parties can spend £30,000 for every seat they contest during the regulated period. There are 650 seats around the country, meaning that parties can spend up to £19.5m during the regulated period in the run-up to the election.

Other large donations to the Tories in the third week of the campaign included £500,000 from JCB Service, which is run by the manufacturing billionaire Anthony Bamford. Lord Bamford, who strongly supported the leave campaign, received a peerage from David Cameron in 2013.

John Armitage, founder of the Egerton Capital hedge fund, also gave £500,000, bringing his donations this year to £1.125m. Mark Coombs, chief executive of the investment manager group Ashmore, gave £300,000.

Jersey House (Developments) Ltd, which is owned by the telecommunications entrepreneur Charles Wigoder, gave £250,000.

The haulage millionaire Steve Parkin gave £125,000. Parkin, who reportedly paid Robbie Williams £1m to perform at one of his parties, founded the delivery business Clipper Logistics.

The large sum from Gore is believed to be his first political donation. He is a seven-time Tony winning and Emmy-nominated producer and owns the John Gore Organization, which is headquartered in New York. The company presents shows, including Wicked and Jersey Boys, across the US, Japan and in London’s West End. Gore’s early investments included the original London production of Cats.

Last week, it emerged that the Conservatives had raised £1.6m in the second week of the general election campaign while Labour raised £383,000.”

Oh no! East Devon’s General Election postal voting screwed up AGAIN

It happened in the 2015 election when the wrong voting instructions were sent out with postal votes:

http://www.devonlive.com/apology-issued-east-devon-postal-voters-affected/story-26395839-detail/story.html

and now it’s happening again this year – but worse and affecting many more people.

And in an election where a handful of votes might decide a winner between Swire and Claire Wright.

If Claire Wright is within 9,000 votes of Swire could she demand a rerun?

Our Returning Officer was called to Parliament to explain why he “lost” 6,000 voters too – saying he preferred to telephone them rather than sending canvassers into deepest, darkest East Devon:

We have identified most of those 6,000 missing voters – just in time for the coming elections

In 2015 he blamed his postal vote fiasco on “inexperienced staff”:

Being in charge of elections at EDDC means never having to say sorry and blaming your staff

What will it be this year?

Is it perhaps time for Mr Williams (EDDC CEO and Election Officer) to consider his position(s)?

THIS YEAR’S FIASCO AFFECTS 9,000 POSTAL VOTES

A total of 9,000 postal voters in East Devon have been reassured after a mistake meant their slips did not have the correct security mark.

A statement has been issued today by the Acting Returning Officer for the East Devon Constituency (Mark Williams) to reassure postal voters who have not yet returned their postal votes.

He said: “It has come to my attention that the postal vote packs we issued on 25th May contained voting slips that did not have an official security mark visible on the front of the ballot paper. This has affected a total of 9,000 postal voters.

“I want to reassure those postal voters affected that if they have not yet returned their postal votes they should still do so. We have taken all the necessary steps to ensure the postal votes are valid and will be counted. I apologise for the error but want to reassure postal voters that they should still complete their postal voting statements and return their postal voting envelopes back to me for validating as part of the normal postal voting process.

“To be valid, a postal vote has to be accompanied by a valid postal voting statement containing the voters date of birth and signature. After these are checked, the envelope containing the postal voting slip is opened and the slip is put into a sealed ballot box where it is kept safe until the formal count. My postal vote opening teams will ensure that all validly completed postal votes are double checked so that they will go forward to the count along with all the other votes that will be cast on polling day itself.”

There is a second issue of postal votes tomorrow (31st May) and all the postal voting slips will have the appropriate security mark. Similarly all ballot papers issued at the polling stations will have the necessary security mark.

The news comes after it was revealed East Devon was chosen as one of eight UK constituencies to be monitored as part of an international mission to ensure elections are fair.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has announced that the constituency will be one of its target seats for the general election.

An Election Assessment Mission (EAM) will be conducted in the area from June 4 to 9 by Phillip Paulwell, an MP from Jamaica who will lead a team of Observers from the Commonwealth.

The Mission, which is being arranged by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK Branch (CPA UK) as it did in the 2015 and 2010 general elections, will also observe elections in seven other UK constituencies to oversee:

polling
counting
post-election complaints or appeals

The team will compromise of three parliamentarians and one election official from Tonga who will monitor Election Day procedures at polling stations, meet with candidates, returning officers, local officials, community groups and other relevant stakeholders in order to assess the conduct of the election.”

Claire Wright one of the 25 key tactical voting candidates along with MPs Caroline Lucas, Nick Clegg and Chuka Ummuna

Press release

“Claire Wright, independent parliamentary candidate in East Devon is today named alongside national political figures as one of 25 key candidate “champions” in a campaign for Britain’s biggest ever tactical vote to stop a Conservative led hard Brexit.

The endorsement comes from the Best for Britain campaign set up by Gina Miller whose fight for Parliament’s right to trigger Article 50 went all the way to the Supreme Court.

Announcing the deal the Best for Britain team said Ms Wright had mounted a strong challenge against Conservative Hugo Swire in East Devon. She is the candidate most likely to put principle first and speak up for what is best for Britain in the next Parliament.

Gina Miller, Board Member, Best for Britain said:

“Theresa May has said this election is about her mandate for negotiation with Europe. But this means accepting the Conservative manifesto’s Deal or No Deal rhetoric. Britain deserves considered debate, not posturing.

“By supporting independent minded candidates, we want to help to deliver a Parliament that scrutinises and holds the Government to account to ensure that Britain get the best deal from Europe. Tactical voting will make a real difference in this election. That’s why we are backing strong and talented candidates that agree with our position that MPs must have the right to a full and free vote in Parliament on the terms of the deal, with all options on the table.”

Other figures named include Labour’s Chuka Ummuna, Liberal Democrat Nick Clegg and Green Caroline Lucas. Best for Britain is a non partisan organisation campaigning to ensure the final negotiation with the EU ends with the best deal for Britain by endorsing MPs that will fight extreme Brexit.

Ms Wright has expressed concern about the Brexit process and has a manifesto commitment to fighting for a vote in parliament on any final deal. Responding to the announcement Ms Wright said:

“I am delighted to receive this endorsement which raises my campaign to a whole new level. It is exciting and humbling to be named alongside experienced national politicians. I firmly believe in the democratic right for MPs to be able to properly debate and meaningfully vote on any Brexit deal.

“Again and again I have heard from people who are so fed up with the divisive nature of our politics. I am proud to be an independent and to fight for parliament to have a say on any Brexit deal.”

Claire will not receive any financial support from the Best for Britain campaign. Her funding has come from about 200 donations by local people through an internet funding site, which is transparent and accountable. It has raised ten thousand pounds in just under three weeks.

The Best for Britain endorsement is the latest high point in Claire’s campaign:

On Sunday her crowdfunding website reached £10 000, raised in less than three weeks, last week she was endorsed by East Devon based Booker prize winning novelist Hilary Mantel, the author of Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. Ms Mantel backed Claire saying:

“If you want a different kind of politics, do something different to get it. Don’t waste your vote, give it to Claire Wright: trust a candidate with a clear vision for our unique part of England.”

Claire has also been endorsed by tactical voting website Tactical2017 as the best East Devon candidate to defeat the Conservatives. She is currently the only Independent candidate in the country with this endorsement.

She has also been named by bookies William Hill as the official opposition in East Devon with odds of 9/2 and the only credible alternative to the Conservatives.

MPs and their tenuous links to their constituencies

Well, we know that Hugo Swire lives in Mid Devon, now here’s another who prefers not to live in his constituency:

Source: Facebook Unseat Marcus Fysh

At least Hampshire is in England – our MP spends lots of time travelling the world as Chairman of the Conservative Middle East Council:

“A January 2016 Middle East Monitor investigation revealed that nearly all of the CMEC’s financial backers have strong business interests in Saudi Arabia and its smaller Gulf allies, ranging from defence to manufacturing to energy resources”

Time to pack him off on his camel?

(Claire Wright – Independent – was born, raised, educated and has family in East Devon and continues to live here; the Lib Dem candidate is a Teignmouth Councillor; the Labour Party’s candidate may or may not live in East Devon (says so but candidate documents say Central Devon).

Claire Wright reaches her £10,000 crowdfunding target

Though Owl is sure she would be grateful for more – she doesn’t have big donors or battle buses to call on – just ordinary people. You know, those affected by health cuts, education cuts and environmental destruction.

The ones caused by Hugo Swire’s party and its fat cat donors.

The choice really is yours.

Who do you believe on the environment – Claire Wright or Hugo Swire

Claire Wright said that the environment post-Brexit wouldn’t be in safe hands if Conservatives win and did something about it for Devon:

http://www.claire-wright.org/index.php/post/devon_county_council_signs_up_to_my_motion_on_protecting_devons_nature_afte

Hugo Swire said she was scare-mongering and it would be fine:

https://www.hugoswire.org.uk/news/blog-birds-and-bees-and-brexit

The Guardian now says:

The UK is lobbying Europe to water down a key energy-saving target despite the fact it will not take effect until after Brexit, according to leaked documents that sparked warnings that energy bills could rise and jobs put at risk.

On the day Theresa May triggered article 50, government officials asked the European commission to weaken or drop elements of its flagship energy efficiency law.

Green campaigners warned that the efforts to undermine the energy efficiency directive were a sign the Conservatives would dilute or abolish European energy and climate policies after the UK leaves the EU.

In the past, the UK has publicly welcomed the targets, which end in 2020, as an important driver for reducing consumer bills and reliance on energy imports.

The European commission wants a binding target of improving energy efficiency 30% by 2030, compared with business-as-usual.

But documents obtained by Greenpeace, dated 29 March, show the UK urging the commission to lower the goal to 27% and make it non-binding on the EU’s 28 members. A more recent version, dated 22 May and seen by the Guardian, shows the UK has maintained its stance. …

Health service underfund: nothing to do with patients, everything to do with politicians

All the more reason to vote for Claire Wright and not Hugo Swire, who voted for the Health and Social Care Act 2012 that created the money-gobbling, privatising internal market (though Blair started PFI as a way of cooking the Treasury’s books).

One reason for East Devon bed closures is that Tiverton Hospital (24 beds) CANNOT be reduced in beds or closed because it would be too expensive to break the PFI contract.

And Owl STILL wants to know if Neil Parish’s new hip is private or NHS.

“Councils and hospital trusts are trying to ditch controversial private finance initiative (PFI) deals as austerity makes them unaffordable.

The long-term deals, which were hugely popular in the 2000s, were used to pay for new schools, hospitals, prisons and roads. They were designed to shift risk to the private sector but were often struck on inflexible terms spanning several decades. Cash-strapped public sector bodies are increasingly trying to escape from PFI deals as the contracts eat up bigger slices of their revenues.

Councils are turning to an obscure arm of the Treasury, the Public Works Loan Board, to refinance debt at a much lower rate — shifting the risk back onto the state. Ending deals also exposes councils to hefty compensation fees.

Deals including a £2.7bn highways contract in Birmingham and a waste contract in Essex are under pressure. An industry adviser said several hospital trusts are trying to unwind PFI deals. “They have to balance shrinking budgets in the near term and the PFIs are increasingly gobbling up their revenues.”

International observers choose to oversee fairness of East Devon General Election

Returning Officer Mark Williams, EDDC CEO must be delighted.

“An international mission to ensure elections are fair has chosen East Devon among eight UK constituencies to be monitored on June 8.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) has announced that the constituency will be one of its target seats for the general election.

Tory Sir Hugo Swire is bidding to retain the seat – one of the safest in the county – and see off a challenge from popular local independent candidate Claire Wright.

Ms Wright, who finished second in 2015, has been selected by a tactical voting website as the best option for non Tories to topple the long-serving former cabinet minister, the only independent to receive such an endorsement.

The team will compromise of three parliamentarians and one election official from Tonga who will monitor Election Day procedures at polling stations, meet with candidates, returning officers, local officials, community groups and other relevant stakeholders in order to assess the conduct of the election.

Head of Mission Sebastian Pillay an MP from the Seychelles, said: “Exercising the right to vote is a fundamental part of democracy.

“CPA UK’s Election Assessment Mission will seek to ensure the UK election process is legitimate and representative of the electorate.

“On behalf of the team, we look forward to engaging with the democratic process in the UK.”

Chief Executive of CPA UK, Andrew Tuggey added: “This third UK Election Assessment Mission is a vital element of CPA UK’s commitment to enhance openness and transparency in parliamentary democracy across the Commonwealth. Assessing elections upholds the core values of the Commonwealth.

The following will observe events in East Devon:

Phillip Paulwell CD MP (lead observer) – Jamaica
-Hon. Yvette D’ath MP – Australia
-Hon. Ichungw’ah Antony Kimani MP – Kenya
-Rt Hon. Lord Dalgety QC – Tonga”

And now the really, really bad news

The DCC health and social care committee chaired by Sarah Randall-Johnson also has on it DCC Councillor Phil Twiss and EDDC representative member Paul Diviani.

Neither has ever been seen at health service cut protest meetings to save threatened hospitals (either in their council or personal capacities) and both known (along with Randall Johnson) for enthusiastically, even possibly zealously, toeing the Tory party line and all gung-ho to give Mrs May their utter devotion. And they had to be dragged kicking and screaming by EDDC Independents to stand up for local services still being viciously cut.

Luckily, we still have Independent Councillor Claire Wright to represent US. And one Independent Claire Wright is worth more than three local slavish Tories!

“Claire Wright stands up for pensioners”

“Claire Wright, the independent County Councillor fighting to win the Devon East constituency, is opposing what she deems a triple-pronged attack on pensioners, revealed in the Conservative manifesto this week.

She said: “The Conservative manifesto contains some appalling attacks on the very people who can bear it the least.

“In recent years we have seen younger people, those on benefits and disabled people, lose vital financial support and it seems that the Conservatives are now targeting older people.

“The winter fuel allowance will be so restricted that an estimated 10 MILLION people out of 12 million will lose out. That’s almost everyone.

This will create terrible hardship for older people who are already struggling to make ends meet in addition to heating their homes.

The pension triple lock is set to be lifted, which could see the same people who are struggling to make ends meet suffer hardship as they see their state pension lose value year after year.

“Meanwhile insurance companies circle like sharks, trying to cash in by providing schemes with high premiums. What kind of caring Conservatism is that? They’re taking apart the welfare state and selling it off piece by piece.”

“I’ve received messages from pensioners who are concerned, upset and angry. These are people who’ve worked hard for 40 years or more, paid their taxes and National Insurance like good citizens do, and simply want to pass on their home to their children or their grandchildren.

“And the Conservatives are aiming to take it away: Incredible! Many of them are core conservative voters. They’re telling me that they will never vote Tory again and that they’re happy to find an Independent they can back instead. One couple called it ‘an insult to our generation’.”

“It is deeply unfair, especially when the government is prioritising spending billions on projects that are nothing to do with improving lives of people living here, such as HS2, a third runway at Heathrow, building brand new roads, free schools and new grammar schools, to give just a few examples.

East Devon is well known as a beautiful place to retire to. The Guardian named it number five in the country in a 2012 article. The 2011 census showed that 28% of our local population is aged 65 and over, and that three quarters of people here are owner-occupiers. Both of those statistics are significantly higher than the national average.

So East Devon will be particularly hard hit by this misguided policy. Our local pensioners, who’ve paid into the system for decades, are being deserted by the government.

Meanwhile Hugo Swire, the Conservative candidate, is tweeting about Brexit and refusing to come to hustings.

“Theresa May talked about ‘Mainstream Britain’: that’s precisely what she’s attacking right here in East Devon!”

The Conservatives plans have been questioned by politicians and others across the spectrum.

Sarah Wollaston, the Conservative MP for Totnes raised concerns. The National Pensioners Convention is worried, and the term ‘dementia tax‘ seems to have caught on.

Even the Bow Group, the oldest Conservative think tank in the country, has described the proposal as “the biggest stealth tax in history”.

Claire continued: “We need to pick up the Dilnot Commission’s proposal from 2011, for a cap on what an individual would have to pay on care in their lifetime. The Commission was appointed by the coalition government, and proposed a cap of £35,000.

“Implementing this would ensure security for our pensioners: thousands of people in East Devon who deserve better.”

“If I’m elected to parliament on June 8th (and that’s looking increasingly likely), this is precisely the kind of assault I will stand up against.

I will work with MPs in other parties, just as I’ve been working with councillors from other parties for the last six years. I will do my best to protect ordinary people here in this beautiful constituency from the ravages of the Conservatives.

Unlike other MPs who have to follow the whip and worry more about their party leaders than the people who put them there, my focus will always be the welfare of the people of East Devon.”

Criminal damage and theft of Claire Wright publicity boards

Several people are reporting that boards supporting Independent Parliamentary candidate Claire Wright are being torn down and taken away during the night, particularly in Newton Poppleford.

This is criminal theft, criminal damage and, perhaps, also trespass.

Board owners might wish to train their webcams on their boards – just to see which raptors alight on them, of course.

Someone very, very frit of the lady – wonder who?

Top writer Hilary Mantel endorses Claire Wright for East Devon MP

“Bring up the voters! Novelist Hilary Mantel backs Claire Wright as “a candidate with a clear vision for our unique part of England.”

Novelist and East Devon resident Hilary Mantel has spoken out in favour of East Devon Independent parliamentary candidate Claire Wright.

Ms Mantel who has just returned from a trip to the US backed Ms Wright in the 2015 election in a column in a national magazine. Today she has issued a statement of her own in favour of Claire:

“Claire Wright is the candidate who will speak up for Devon East – she stands as an Independent, and that means she is free to speak with a strong and genuine voice on issues that affect all of us in our everyday lives. She is local, energetic, knowledgeable, and has a real chance of going to Westminster – if local people will come out and support her on election day. If you want a different kind of politics, do something different to get it. Don’t waste your vote, give it to Claire Wright: trust a candidate with a clear vision for our unique part of England.”

Responding to this endorsement Ms Wright says:

“It has been a completely amazing week for my campaign, but this news tops it all for me. Hilary Mantel is a hugely respected and really talented writer. I am so proud that she is backing me in such a public way. I am sure she knows what it means to me!”

This is the latest in a series of boosts for Ms Wright’s campaign: on Wednesday, the leading tactical voting website Tactical2017 endorsed her as the best East Devon candidate to defeat the Conservatives. Claire is currently the only Independent candidate in the country to be endorsed by Tactical2017.

Earlier in the week bookies William Hill confirmed Ms Wright as the official opposition in East Devon with odds of 9/2 and the only credible alternative to the Conservatives. And earlier this month Exeter City player David Wheeler also invited followers of his newspaper column to “rally behind the Independent Claire Wright” in East Devon.

REAL Hustings in East Devon – minus Swire who refuses to attend

Hustings are booked in so far at:
Friday 26 May – Cranbrook (details to be confirmed)
Tuesday 30 May, 7.30pm – Exmouth – Holy Trinity Church

Swire says he will do his own hustings alone, though how you can “hust” on your own is a bit of a puzzle! We like to see ALL our candidates answering the same questions at the same time at hustings. Alas, this will not happen in East Devon. Claire Wright and other candidates would rather it did.

Neil Parish (Con) IS attending hustings in his Tiverton and Honiton constituency.

EDDC and community hospitals: too little, too late, too suspiciously close to the general election

Well, they would say this now (“slamming” the decision to close Honiton and Seaton community beds with those in Axminster and Ottery already gone) wouldn’t they – after saying almost nothing before county elections but with all the recent bad news that reflects badly on incumbent Tory MPs and extremely well on Claire Wright!

Remember: talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words.

http://www.midweekherald.co.uk/news/district-councillors-slam-decision-to-slash-inpatient-beds-1-5024363

Swire refuses to attend any hustings: what COULD he be afraid of!

He says he prefers door-knocking. Please do inform Owl if he knocks at YOUR door.

http://www.exmouthjournal.co.uk/news/hustings-row-as-east-devon-election-campaign-begins-1-5023424

People might think he is afraid to meet the most popular councillor in Devon (Claire Wright, Independent Parliamentary candidate) on her home turf. Especially as she has a strong track record of standing AGAINST health and education cuts and FOR environmental protection.

Swire? Says he wants ” good health care” but has endorsed CCG changes, did not fight bed cuts in East Devon, only his own corner, is part of the government that is cutting Devon education funding and says we don’t need to worry about environmental protection as it is safe in Tory hands. AND he says being an MP isn’t a job, so he and George Osborne should have as many jobs as they like (he declares two, bringing in £5,000 per month).

He spends much of his time in the Middle East, frequently asks questions in Parliament about places like the Maldives, Egypt and Venezuela and lives in mid-Devon when he ventures south of London.

No wonder he won’t debate!

Claire Wright says:

“I am really disappointed that Hugo Swire is refusing to attend hustings during the general election period. MPs are supposed to be accountable to constituents and this is a golden opportunity for him to talk about how he plans to represent people if he is re-elected. It reflects very badly on him that he is refusing to attend.

“I was looking forward to having a robust debate with him and I can only assume that he is refusing to attend because he is worried about being challenged by me – I have been regularly holding him to account for the past three years via my blog and through the media!”

Main tactical voting site endorses Claire Wright (Ind) as only credible choice to challenge incumbent Swire

“Claire Wright, Independent Parliamentary candidate for Devon East has been endorsed by the chief tactical voting site Tactical2017 as the only candidate who can defeat the Conservatives. Ms Wright is the only Independent candidate in the country to be endorsed so far by the site.

This follows odds of 9/2 from William Hill who confirmed that they see Ms Wright as the official opposition in East Devon and the only credible alternative to the Conservatives.

Commenting on her listing Claire Wright says:

“I’m absolutely over the moon to be endorsed by Tactical2017. The momentum behind my campaign now is incredible. My boards and posters are appearing all over the constituency and my team continue to be deluged with offers of help, as my manifesto is hand delivered across East Devon by my army of helpers.”

“People’s generosity and faith in me is astonishing. Crowdfunding has reached around £7500 in just 10 days with 100 separate donations. This is half the amount we fundraised in a whole year during the 2015 General Election campaign.

“Thank you so much to everyone who is working so hard to elect me as East Devon’s MP. You are doing a sterling job!”

The tactical voting endorsement comes as Claire Wright launches her manifesto in Sidmouth tomorrow (Thursday) evening with clear statements on her policy ideas from health, education, small businesses, young people and the environment as well as Brexit.

Introducing the manifesto Ms Wright says: “On health I will fight to protect community hospitals and other local health services from cuts and work cross-party to achieve more NHS funding to keep pace with demand. I will press for more funding for social care, which is still significantly lower than it was in 2010. I will also strongly oppose plans that disadvantage our NHS, such as the creation of NHS Property Services which seeks to sell off hospitals and health centres.

“In education I will support local schools and parents and work cross-party at a local and national level to gain a realistic and fair level of funding for East Devon’s education system. I will listen to headteachers views on local education provision and represent these views in parliament.
“For small business I will work to reverse the recent increase in business rates, listen to small businesses and their requirements and work to achieve a better deal and be a champion for independent traders, especially those working in tourism.

“For younger people I will work towards giving 16 year olds the right to vote; help young people to have a voice in improving their communities and work for improvements to underfunded mental health services, counselling and pastoral support in schools.

“On the environment, I accept that we need some development, especially for younger people and those of us on low incomes and I will work to amend the permissive National Planning Policy Framework so it is less about growth at any price and more about balanced communities.
“In East Devon nature, as elsewhere in the country
, is in serious trouble due to habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change.
“I will listen and act upon local people’s views on protection of the countryside and nature and urge government ministers to do all they can to comply with vital climate change targets.

“I am asking the people of East Devon to listen carefully to what I am saying and use their vote to elect a hardworking and effective MP to represent them in parliament.”
